Germany warns Iran against any ‘escalation’ after Israeli strikes

Olaf Scholz, the chancellor of Germany, cautioned Iran on Saturday against any “escalation” following Israel’s nighttime strikes on Iranian military facilities.

Israel said that the attacks were a response to a missile strike earlier this month by Iran.

“My message to Iran is clear: massive escalating reactions must not continue. These must stop immediately. Only then can we open the possibility of a peaceful evolution in the Middle East,” he posted on X.

Scholz demanded the release of all Hamas-held hostages as well as ceasefires in Gaza and Lebanon.

He urged the execution of UN resolution 1701 in Lebanon, which mandates that Israel and Hezbollah refrain from deploying their armed troops in southern Lebanon in the wake of the 2006 battle between the two groups.

“We expect Hezbollah to withdraw beyond the Litani River, to allow for apeaceful evolution,” the German Chancellor said.
