In a fraud case brought by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC), the High Court (HC) today cleared former State Minister for Home Affairs Lutfozzaman Babar and revoked his eight-year prison term.
Justice Md Kamrul Hossain Mollah’s High Court division bench rendered the decision, granting the BNP leader’s criminal appeal.
In the case filed with the Ramna Police Station on January 13, 2008, Babar was found guilty and given an eight-year prison sentence by the Dhaka Special Judge Court-7 on October 12, 2021, for illegally accumulating approximately Taka 7.05 crore in wealth.
Section 26(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act of 2004 convicted Babar to three years of harsh imprisonment, while Section 27(1) sentenced him to five years. In addition, the court penalised him 10,000 Taka and sentenced him to three more months in jail for nonpayment. The judge ruled that the two jail terms would run concurrently.
Lutfozzaman Babar subsequently appealed his conviction.
