Gas has been discovered in an old well in Haripur of Sylhet.
This has been confirmed by the authorities of Sylhet Gas Field Limited after two rounds of workover.
Currently, gas is being flowed from Well No 7 following the workover.
A second round of testing was conducted, revealing gas at a depth of just 1,200 meters.
Mohammad Mizanur Rahman, managing director of Sylhet Gas Field Limited (SGFL), confirmed the information.
Workover on the ancient gas well Sylhet-7 started in July of this year, he said. Gas was discovered at a depth of 2,010 meters on October 14. On Tuesday, gas was discovered once more in a different well zone at a depth of 1,200 meters.
According to him, it is challenging to give precise information regarding the quantity of gas available prior to carrying out additional testing. He added that gas testing might take an additional three to four days. However, it is preliminarily estimated that an average of 8.5 million cubic feet of gas can be extracted daily.
He added that formal announcements will be made upon the adviser’s arrival and that plans are in motion to bring him to Sylhet from the Ministry of Power, Energy, and Mineral Resources.
According to Mizanur Rahman, the national grid previously received 60–70 million cubic feet of gas from other Sylhet Gas Fields wells. The national grid will shortly incorporate the gas from Well No. 7.
Gas was found in the eighth well in the Kailashtila gas field in Sylhet on May 24 of this year following drilling. The well yields 21 million cubic feet of gas per day at depths ranging from 3,440 to 5,500 feet.
Prior to that, on January 27, a new layer of gas with an estimated volume of 157 billion cubic feet was found at the second well in Rashidpur, which is a component of the Sylhet Gas Field.
