Today, another 157 trapped irregular migrants from Bangladesh came home from Libya.
According to a press release from the foreign ministry, the repatriation was carried out as a result of a collaborative effort between the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), the Bangladesh Embassy in Tripoli, and the foreign ministry.
A chartered Buraq Air flight (UZ 0222) that took them home touched down at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport this morning at 4:25 a.m.
The foreign ministry and IOM officials met the returning migrants at the airport upon their arrival.
Most of the returnees had entered Libya illegally with the intention of reaching Europe by sea, influenced and aided by human traffickers. The foreign ministry claimed that several of them had been abused and kidnapped while in Libya.
Officials from the foreign ministry asked the repatriates to educate their communities about the dangers of illegal migration, especially the risky route to Europe via Libya.
Each repatriated person received a Taka 6,000 cash award from the IOM along with food supplies, medical support, and temporary housing if needed.
To guarantee the safe return of Bangladeshi nationals held in various detention facilities around Libya, the foreign ministry, the Bangladeshi mission in Tripoli, and IOM are working nonstop.
