Bangladesh win toss, bat in first Test against South Africa

On Monday, in the first of two Test matches between Bangladesh and South Africa in Mirpur, captain Najmul Hossain Shanto chose to bat after winning the toss.

The Test is Bangladesh’s first international cricket match since autocratic ruler Sheikh Hasina was overthrown in August by a student-led uprising.

Points from the series will be awarded for the World Test Championship, which will conclude in England the following year. Right now, South Africa is ranked sixth, and Bangladesh is ranked seventh.

Aiden Markram is the captain of South Africa as Temba Bavuma is out with an injury.

The second test is scheduled for October 29 in Chittagong, also known as Chattogram.
