Airbus to cut up to 2,500 jobs in space, defence unit

According to a source familiar with the management-union negotiations, the troubled defence and space sector of the massive European airline Airbus intends to eliminate up to 2,500 positions.

The source stated, under anonymity, that the details of the job cuts were not immediately known. There are 35,000 employees in the division.

Airbus opted not to respond.

Despite a decline in demand, the European corporation remains the global leader in telecommunications satellite technology.

A large write-down in the group’s space sector caused its net earnings to drop by 46% to 825 million euros ($900 million) in the first half of the year.
