As it handed the Nobel Peace Prize to the Japanese anti-nuclear organisation Nihon Hidankyo on Friday, the Norwegian Nobel Committee stated that nuclear states had a specific “responsibility” to enforce the taboo against the use of nuclear weapons.
The prize for this year emphasises how important it is to maintain the nuclear taboo. The Norwegian Nobel Committee chair, Jorgen Watne Frydnes, stated at a press conference announcing this year’s winner, “And we have all a responsibility, particularly the nuclear powers.”
