Large portions of Kenya, including the capital Nairobi, were left in complete darkness on Friday due to a power outage, according to the primary electricity supplier for the East African economic superpower.
Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) announced in a statement that all areas served by the national network had power outages, with the exception of North Rift and a portion of the Western Region.
“We regret any inconvenience caused and urge for patience from our customers as we work towards restoring normalcy at the earliest opportunity,” it added.
Frustrated Kenyans were swift to vent their anger on social media after the power cut hit at around 9:30 pm (1830 GMT).
“Now KPLC gotta be standing for Kenya poor lighting Company,” read one sarcastic post on X, formerly Twitter.
The Kenya Airports Authority stated on X that Jomo Kenyatta International Airport in Nairobi, a significant regional hub for passengers and freight, continued to operate normally while it converted to generators and backup power systems.
Although there are frequently local blackouts in Kenya, there have recently been widespread power outages there.
