Students who spearheaded the demonstrations in Bangladesh that forced longtime premier Sheikh Hasina to resign have stated that they would prefer an interim administration headed by Nobel Peace laureate Muhammad Yunus.
On Tuesday, Yunus’s office announced that he had consented to serve as an advisor to a transitional administration.
General Waker-Uz-Zaman, the head of Bangladesh’s army, is scheduled to meet with student leaders on Tuesday. The day before, he declared that an interim government would be formed but did not specify who would lead it.
The gathering takes place shortly after President Mohammed Shahabuddin’s administration announced the dissolution of the parliament in a statement.
One of the main demands of the demonstrators had been the dissolution of the legislature.
