‘Star Trek’ to expand with new comedy series

The Star Trek Universe is about to boldly go where it hasn’t gone before, with a new live-action series in the works.

Announced at San Diego Comic-Con on Saturday, the forthcoming series is being developed by Justin Simien, the creator of ‘Dear White People’, and Tawny Newsome, known for her role in ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Alex Kurtzman, who has been instrumental in many of the franchise’s recent triumphs, is also involved in the project.

A live-action comedy series, the new show will take place on an opulent resort planet where outsiders from the Federation go about their daily lives while their exploits are reported throughout the galaxy.

The project intends to merge comedy with the traditional ‘Star Trek’ components, maybe reflecting the office humour of shows like ‘The Office’ or ‘Parks and Recreation’.

Simien, who moderated the announcement panel, revealed that ‘Star Trek: The Next Generation’ was a significant influence on his career, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“Dear White People could not exist without ‘Next Generation’,” Simien noted, reflecting on how the 1980s series shaped his approach to ensemble storytelling and diverse character perspectives.

Alex Kurtzman praised Newsome’s contribution to the project, highlighting her impressive writing skills. “She is a stone-cold assassin of a writer,” Kurtzman said, acknowledging her role as a writer on the upcoming ‘Starfleet Academy’ series and her impact on this new venture.

The series’ writers and executive producers will include Simien, Newsome, and Kurtzman. Additional executive producers include Aaron Baiers, Rod Roddenberry, and Trevor Roth.

The Hollywood Reporter claims that CBS Studios is producing the program. This new series will be added to the extensive library of “Star Trek” programming, which already includes “Lower Decks,” “Strange New Worlds,” and the much-anticipated “Starfleet Academy.”

Simien is expected to contribute his distinct comic flair to the “Star Trek” world. Simien is well-known for his incisive racial satire in “Dear White People” and his most recent works, “Bad Hair” and “Haunted Mansion.”

Newsome, an actor-comedian with notable roles in ‘Brockmire’ and ‘Space Force’, will continue her involvement in the ‘Star Trek’ franchise while also contributing her voice talents to the new series.
