Iran’s Khamenei formally grants Pezeshkian presidential powers

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the supreme leader of Iran, formally endorsed reformer Masoud Pezeshkian on Sunday to become the ninth president of the Islamic republic after elections earlier this month.

“I endorse the vote (for) the wise, honest, popular, and scholarly Mr. Pezeshkian, and I am appointing him as the president of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Khamenei stated in a message read by the director of his office. Tuesday is when parliament is scheduled to formally swear in the new president.
