The European champions Real Madrid announced on Wednesday that captain Luka Modric has agreed to a new one-year contract that will keep him at the Santiago Bernabeu for the forthcoming campaign.
The 38-year-old midfield player’s deal was extended to June 30, 2025. Six Champions League crowns, four La Liga crowns, and two Copa del Rey championships with Real Madrid have all been won by Modric.
Despite having only made 37 starts in the previous two league seasons, he is still a vital member of Carlo Ancelotti’s team because he led Los Blancos to a Champions League and La Liga double last season. Last month, during Euro 2024, Modric became the oldest goalscorer in the history of the European Championship when he scored for Croatia against Italy.
Despite his best efforts, the 2018 World Cup runners-up were eliminated in the group stage.
“I hope to continue playing for a very long time, but I’ll probably have to hang up my boots at some point,” Modric stated following Croatia’s heartbreaking 1-1 draw with Italy.
“I’ll keep playing on, I don’t know for how much longer.” The announcement of Modric’s contract extension was made the day after Kylian Mbappe, the new star acquisition who joined from Paris Saint-Germain, was introduced to the Madrid supporters.
On Sunday, August 18, Madrid will begin defending their league title against Real Mallorca.
