Hasan Mahmud, the foreign minister, announced on Sunday that 3,000 workers from Bangladesh would be hired by four EU nations.
After saying goodbye to EU ambassador Charles Whiteley at the ministry in Dhaka this afternoon, the minister assured reporters that Italy, Germany, Greece, and Romania would hire the workers from Bangladesh.
According to the EU envoy, depending on the caliber of these 3,000 individuals, additional recruiting from Bangladesh may be possible, the minister informed the media.
According to the minister, the discussion also covered the extension of the EU’s reduced tariff and other benefits for Bangladeshi products through 2032, following the nation’s graduation as an LDC in 2026.
The foreign minister also discussed the BIMSTEC foreign ministers’ retreat, which took place in New Delhi on July 11–12.
At the BIMSTEC foreign ministers’ second retreat conference, topics like climate change, collaboration in the energy security area, and expanding the use of renewable energy through hydroelectricity generating in Nepal and Bhutan were covered.
According to Hasan Mahmud, Bangladesh will lead BIMSTEC as its next chair during the organization’s summit in Thailand on September 4.
The foreign minister held bilateral meetings with the foreign ministers of India and Myanmar on the sidelines of the retreat.
Hasan Mahmud said the issue of fixing the quota for the import of perishable goods came up in the discussion with the Indian foreign minister.
Besides, issues such as the visit of the technical team on Teesta, Bangladesh’s inclusion in BRICS and joint consultative committee were discussed during the meeting.
The foreign minister also said his Myanmar counterpart informed them that they want to start the repatriation of Rohingya but that will be after the current situation in Rakhine becomes normal.
Asked about the quota reform movement, the minister said he does not think that continuing the movement is no longer justifiable since the matter is pending with the court.
