Asim Saha, a novelist and poet who won the Ekushey Award, passed away this afternoon at the Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) hospital in this city while receiving treatment. His age was 75.
“Asim Saha breathed his last at around 2:15 pm today . . . He was undergoing treatment at the intensive care unit of the BSMMU with parkinson, constipation, and diabetes,” poet Mahbuba Rahman Laki, a family friend of the late poet, told BSS this evening.
His two kids, Avro and Aorga, his well-known singer and poet wife Anjona Saha, as well as family and admirers, mourned his passing.
Born on February 20, 1949, in the Netrakona district, Saha finished his higher secondary education at Madaripur Government Nazimuddin College in 1967 after completing his secondary education in 1965. He continued his education at Dhaka University, where in 1973 he graduated with a postgraduate degree in Bengali literature.
Asim Saha has made enormous contributions to Bengali literature. His poetry had received several honors and was renowned for its profundity and sensitivity. Twelve prizes were given to him in recognition of his exceptional contributions to Bengali literature.
The Bangla Academy Literary Award was given to him in recognition of his noteworthy
In 2012, he received the esteemed Bangla Academy Literary Award, which acknowledged his noteworthy contributions to the field of poetry.
In the meantime, the Ekushey Padak, the nation’s second-highest civilian honor, was given to him by the Bangladeshi government in recognition of his achievements to Bengali literature and language in 2019.
Over 20 books of poetry and novels have been authored by poet Asim Saha.
The timing of his memorial ceremonies and funeral, according to family sources, is still pending.
