Md. Akhter Hossain, the Principal Coordinator for SDG Affairs at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO), has recommended that the Federation of Bangladesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FBCCI) expand private sector involvement in order to meet the SDG targets.
According to him, there is no other way to effectively associate the business sector with measures aimed at achieving the SDGs.
According to a press release from the FBCCI, Akhter made the suggestions while serving as chief guest at the second meeting of the five-theme group of the Bangladesh Private Sector Working Committee (BPSWC), which was held at the organization’s office in the Motijheel neighborhood of the capital.
Noting that the role of the FBCCI, as being the guardian of the private sector, is very important for attaining the SDGs, Akhter said a strategic paper could be framed on how FBCCI could play more active role in attaining the SDGs.
He emphasized on involving all the members of the FBCCI in line with the goals and targets of the SDGs and thus making them more motivated in this regard. “In this regard, the FBCCI can take support from the academia and experts if needed,”added Akhter.
The Principal Coordinator on SDG Affairs outlined the government’s numerous plans and actions to achieve the SDGs and expressed hope that the private sector, led by the FBCCI, would provide unwavering support in this area.
The meeting was chaired by AKM Shamsuddoha, convenor of Working Group 4, and featured speakers such as BPSWC member Brig Gen (retd) Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah, SDG focal points from various UN agencies, Monzur Ahmed, adviser for trade and tariff policy affairs for the FBCCI, and Faruk Ahmed, secretary general of the Bangladesh Employers Federation.
