27 people were murdered after a fire tore through a packed amusement park in India, according to police, as rescuers searched the scene early on Sunday morning. Four of the victims were small children.
Indian media said on Sunday that survivors of the fire that tore through a center full of youths playing games like bowling had to kick down doors and jump out of windows to escape.
In the Gujarati state’s Rajkot city, bodies covered in white cloths were arranged in rows before being removed from the center.
Police stated that many of the corpses were so badly charred that was difficult to recognize them. They also stated that the four youngsters who were confirmed dead were all under the age of twelve.
When the fire started on Saturday night, more than 300 people were inside the two-story building of the TRP amusement and theme park enjoying the long weekend. Rajkot fire officer Ilesh Kher spoke with media that evening.
“People got trapped as a temporary structure at the facility collapsed near the entrance, making it difficult for the people to come out,” according to him.
He stated that the structure’s flammable composition contributed to the flames spreading quickly.
