Russia and Iran working to create single BRICS currency: Iranian envoy

Iranian Ambassador to Russia Kazem Jalali stated during a press conference during “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum” that Iran is actively involved in the events held under Russia’s chairmanship in BRICS and that the nations are attempting to establish a unified currency for the association.

The envoy mentioned that Iran is actively involved in BRICS as a recent addition to the group.

“The creation of a new single currency within the framework of the association is what Russia and Iran are working on,” the diplomat said.

The diplomat pointed out that the United States uses the dollar to create restrictions, and therefore the use of national currencies in mutual settlements is on the agenda.

“More than 60% of bilateral trade is in rubles and rials,” he said and added that relations between Russia and Iran are now at the “golden stage.”

Kazan, Russia, is hosting the 15th International Economic Forum titled “Russia – Islamic World: KazanForum 2024” from May 14–19. The theme for this year is “Trust and Cooperation.” The forum’s principal objectives are to support the growth of Islamic financial system institutions in Russia and to enhance commercial and economic, scientific and technical, social and cultural links between Russian regions and OIC member nations.
