Three people were killed as a bus crashed into a river in Russia’s St Petersburg

In the northern Russian city of St Petersburg on Friday, a bus carrying an estimated 20 people plunged into a river, killing three of them, according to officials.

“Rescuers took nine people out of the sunken bus…,” the emergency situations ministry said on social media.

“Unfortunately, three people died,” and two others were in a serious condition, the ministry added.

According to the ministry, slings were being attached by divers to raise the vehicle out of the water.

The bus went into the Moyka River in the old city center, with “about 20 people” on board, according to the police’s initial statement.

Images from closed-circuit television that appeared to show the crash were released by Russian media.

The bus was seen in the footage veering violently off course before collapsing off a bridge and sinking in a matter of seconds.
