Bangladesh rolls out red carpet as Qatar Amir arrives

President Mohammed Shahabuddin threw out the red carpet to welcome Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim Bin Hamad Al-Thani, who arrived here today for a two-day official visit.

This afternoon, at the capital’s Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), the Head of State greeted Qatar Amir with bouquets of flowers.

Earlier, at around five o’clock in the evening, a special plane carrying the Amir and his entourage touched down at the airport.

While disembarking from the airplane, the Amir was greeted by a 21-gun salute, signaling his presence at the HSIA.

The national anthems of the two nations were playing when the Amir was led to the improvised saluting dais and given “a guard of honor”.

Later, the Amir of Qatar inspected the parade ground.

President Shahabuddin introduced the Bangladesh delegation waiting in the presentation line with Amir as the Amir also introduced his representatives.

Ministers including Liberation War Affairs Minister AKM Mozammel Huq, Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan, Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud, State for Expatriate’s Welfare and Overseas Employment Shafiqur Rahman Chowdhury, State Minister for Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Nasrul Hamid, chiefs of the three services, principal secretary to the prime minister, foreign secretary, secretaries concerned to the president office and senior military and civil officials were present there.

At the President Shahabuddin’s and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s special invitation, the Amir of Qatar has arrived in Dhaka.

According to the itinerary, the Amir of Qatar and his entourages would stay at the Le Meridien Dhaka Hotel during their visit to Dhaka following the airport ceremony.

Dr. Hasan Mahmud, the foreign minister, will make a courtesy call on the Amir of Qatar tomorrow morning.

Next, at 10:15 a.m., the Amir and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will meet at Shimul, the prime minister’s office. They will also meet one-on-one, or tete-a-tete.

Later, six agreements and five memorandums of understandings (MoUs) are likely to be signed between the two countries during this visit.

Agreements are: avoidance of double taxation and tax evasion, cooperation in legal matters, maritime transport, mutual investment development and protection, transfer of convicted persons and establishment of a joint business council.

In addition to this, five memorandums of understanding (MoUs) are anticipated to be signed during the visit, covering topics such as collaboration in diplomatic training, higher education and scientific research, and the labor force.

At the Bangabhaban’s Durbar Hall on April 23, President Shahabuddin will throw a courtesy meal in honor of the Amir of Qatar.

On Tuesday night, the Amir is expected to depart for Qatar on a dedicated aircraft.

According to a program, the foreign minister of Bangladesh will bid him farewell at the HSIA.
