Following formal notification, flydubai, an airline based in Dubai, canceled flights to Iran on Friday, according to a statement.
“In line with the issued NOTAM (notice to air missions), our flights to Iran today have been cancelled,” said the statement sent to AFP.
It further stated that once the airport in the Iranian capital was closed, one flight that had already left for Tehran returned to Dubai.
Wide areas of Iran saw the suspension of flights after explosions in the central province of Isfahan were reported by Iranian official television.
Commercial flights were circumnavigating Tehran to the north and east and avoiding western Iran, including Isfahan, according to flight-tracking software.
The sibling airline of flydubai, the state-owned Emirates airline, which was flying a number of the aircraft, did not immediately respond.
This week, unprecedented rains at Dubai airport—one of the busiest air hubs in the world—caused over 1,000 aircraft cancellations, severely disrupting operations for both flydubai and Emirates.
