Oppenheimer wins big, and Cillian Murphy takes home the best actor prize

“Oppenheimer” won the best picture Oscar on Sunday, capping up its unstoppable ascent to Hollywood’s most coveted award. Cillian Murphy became the first Irish-born recipient of the Best Actor award winner.

Robert Downey Jr. won best supporting actor, Christopher Nolan won best director, and the movie swept the awards ceremony.

Murphy’s critically praised performance as theoretical scientist J Robert Oppenheimer earned him the title of best leading actor.

The actor said he was “overwhelmed” to have won, adding: “I’m a very proud Irishman standing here tonight.”

He thanked Nolan and producer Emma Thomas for “the wildest, most exhilarating, most creatively satisfying journey you’ve taken me on”.

Murphy also paid tribute to “every single crew and cast member, you carried me through”.

He concluded: “We made a film about the man who created the atomic bomb, and for better or for worse, we are all living in Oppenheimer’s world, so I’d like to dedicate this to the peacemakers everywhere.”

Oppenheimer took home seven awards total during the evening, followed by Poor Things with four (including best actress for Emma Stone) and The Zone of Interest with two.
