Bangladesh is commemorating the 15th anniversary of the Pilkhana massacre, which took the lives of 74 people in 2009, including 57 army officers.
At 9:08 a.m. on Sunday, Banani Military Graveyard observed the day by laying wreaths on the graves of the victims as a mark of respect.
Major General SM Salahuddin Islam, the military secretary to the president, and Major General Kabir Ahmed, the military secretary to the prime minister, conveyed their condolences to the martyrs.
Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, the home minister, later paid respects to the martyrs at the cemetery.
Respects were paid to the attack victims by Bangladesh Air Force Air Chief Marshal Shaikh Abdul Hannan, Chief of Air Staff General SM Shafiuddin Ahmed, and Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan.
Major General Mohammad Ashrafulzzaman Siddique, the Director-General of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), made the homage.
At the graves of their loved ones, family members and relatives of the martyred also paid their respects.
Ultimately, a moment of silence was observed to honor the martyrs, and active military personnel saluted and offered prayers for the souls of the fallen.
A few hundred members of the Bangladesh Rifles or BDR (now Border Guard Bangladesh) orchestrated an armed uprising at the force’s Pilkhana Headquarters in Dhaka on February 25, 2009. Among the 74 people they killed were 57 army officers.
After negotiations between the government and the BDR rebels, the mutiny came to an end the next day with the surrender of weapons, ammunition, and grenades.
