On the advice of its External Affairs Ministry, India has approved government-to-government shipments of onions to a number of nations, including Bangladesh, according to an article that was released in today’s Economic Times.
According to one of the people with knowledge of the situation, some exports of onions have been approved for bilateral use, but no decision has been made to relax the export prohibition altogether. It was not possible to find out information on the exporting agency.
According to an additional source, the Indian government has approved limited exports of onions to countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Bhutan, Mauritius, Sri Lanka, and Bahrain.
Owing to growing domestic costs and possible shortages, India, the second-largest exporter of onions worldwide, prohibited shipments of the essential culinary item in December 2023 and extended the prohibition until March 2024. As a result, onion prices skyrocketed in Bangladesh and other nearby nations.
