In order to preserve the nation’s wetlands, Environment, Forests, and Climate Change Minister Saber Hossain Chowdhury has stated that mapping will take place within the next year. He added that in order to decide on a plan of action for the sustainable use of natural resources, coordinated efforts need be made.
On Sunday, in honor of World Wetlands Day, the minister delivered the keynote address at a seminar hosted by the Forest Department.
The environment minister said that wetlands are a crucial part of the environment. They play an important role in protecting biodiversity, managing floods and providing livelihoods. The government has taken various effective steps to protect wetlands. He called upon everyone to help protect wetlands.
Dr. Abdul Hamid, director general of the Department of Environment, and Dr. Farhina Ahmed, secretary of the Ministry of Environment, Forests, and Climate Change, were the event’s distinguished guests.
Chief conservator of forests for the Forest Department, Md. Amir Hossain Chowdhury, presided over the ceremony.
The founder of the Bangladesh Bird Club, Enam Ul Haque, and chairman of the Nature and Life Foundation, Mukit Majumder Babu, participated in the discussion.
The visitors were greeted by Md. Zahidul Kabir, deputy chief conservator of forests, Forest Management Wing.
Keynote presentations were made by Dr M Mokhlesur Rahman, Executive Director, Centre for Natural Resources Studies and Imran Ahmed, Conservator of Forests, Wildlife and Nature Conservation Division, Forest Department.
