Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina received congratulations and praise for her leadership from UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
He said this during a meeting with Foreign Minister Dr. Hasan Mahmud on Sunday afternoon in Kampala, Uganda, during the Third South Summit.
The UN secretary general acknowledged Bangladesh’s crucial contribution to the push for changing the global financial architecture at the meeting.
He also commended Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for her support of several international initiatives run by the UN.
Hasan Mahmud expressed gratitude to the Secretary General on behalf of the government and people of Bangladesh for his audacious and pivotal role in the Gaza War.
In addition, he asked Guterres to maintain the Rohingya problem at the top of the UN priority list.
Mahmud emphasized that 2024 will be Bangladesh’s golden jubilee year of UN membership and that this should be appropriately celebrated.
He also invited Guterres to Bangladesh at the latter’s convenience.
Mahmud briefed the Secretary General on the recently held free, fair and peaceful elections in Bangladesh with people’s participation.
The team from Bangladesh is being led by the foreign minister to Kampala, Uganda for the 19th Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) Summit as well as the Third South Summit of the G-77 and China.
The Minister is accompanied by Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen, Bangladesh’s Permanent Representative to the UN, Muhammad A Muhith, and Bangladesh’s High Commissioner to Kenya and Uganda, Tareque Muhammad.
