In order to hold the upcoming national elections in a free, fair, and credible way in accordance with the laws and regulations of the Constitution, President Mohammed Shahabuddin today called the Election Commission (EC) to play a responsible role with courage and sincerity.
“It is not possible for the Election Commission (EC) alone to conduct a free and fair election . . . A fair and credible election requires active cooperation of the people including the executive department and political parties,” he said.
As Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal’s EC delegation paid him a courtesy call at Bangabhaban to arrange the poll schedule for this afternoon, the President made the remark.
To guarantee free, fair, and inclusive elections, the head of state urged all political parties to stand up.
According to the President, the nation’s democratic tendency is essential to its continued development.
Noting that free, fair elections strengthen democracy, he said, “Democracy and development go hand in hand.”
Speaking on the polls, the President declared, “Through elections, the voters choose their representatives by which people’s expectations are fulfilled.”
He expressed his expectation that the administration would fully collaborate with the EC to ensure that the next JS election is held in a legitimate, fair, and free way.
The CEC updated the President on the overall state of affairs leading up to the impending 12th general elections during the meeting.
The CEC notified the President that in order to ensure free and fair elections, the Election Commission had already had discussions with the political parties.
He also mentioned that necessary instructions have already been given to the executive department and other concerned for smooth completion of the next election.
The Election Commissioners, EC Secretary and Bangabhaban Secretaries were present during the meeting.
