Cyclone ‘Hamoon’ crossing Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram coasts

After 6 p.m. today, the cyclonic storm “Hamoon” over the Bay of Bengal began to move across the shores of Chattogram and Cox’s Bazar.

“The storm may cross the coastal areas by late night today,” Meteorologist Monowar Hossain told BSS this evening.

He claimed that over the northwest bay and the adjacent northeast bay, the strong cyclonic storm Hamoon moved east-northeastward and further weakened into a cyclonic storm over the northeast bay and the surrounding area.

According to the most recent special report from the met office, it was centered at 6 p.m. at approximately 160 km southwest of Chattogram Port, 120 km southwest of Cox’s Bazer Port, 225 km southeast of Mongla Port, and 135 km southeast of Payra Port.

The maximum sustained wind speed within 54 kilometers of the center of the storm is approximately 62 km/h, with gusts up to 88 km/h during squalls. Near the cyclone, the sea will continue to be extremely choppy, the report stated.

It has been recommended that marine ports in Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, and Payra maintain a hoisted danger signal number seven, while those in Mongla and Payra should maintain a hoisted danger signal number five.

Danger Signal No. 7 will be in effect for the coastal districts of Chattogram, Cox’s Bazar, Feni, Noakhali, Laxmipur, as well as its offshore islands and chars.

Under the peripheral effect of the cyclone and steep pressure gradient, the low-lying areas of the coastal districts of Cox’s Bazar, Chattogram, Noakhali, Laxmipur, Feni Borguna, Bhola, Patuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Jhalokathi, Bagherhat, Khulna, Satkhira and their offshore islands and chars are likely to be inundated by wind driven surge of 3-5 feet height above normal astronomical tide.

Under the influence of the cyclone Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to be experienced of heavy to very heavy rainfall. Due to very heavy rainfall landslide may occur at places over the hilly regions of Cox’s Bazar, Bandarban, Rangamati, Khagrachari and Chattogram.

All fishing boats and trawllers over the North Bay have been advised to remain in shelter till further notice.
