Two people were murdered and at least two others were injured when debris from a drone that was shot down over the Russian region of Belgorod, which borders Ukraine, landed on residences, according to the regional governor on Thursday.
“The air defence system in Belgorod district shot down an aircraft-type UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) approaching the city,” Belgorod Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov wrote on the Telegram messaging app.
“As a result of falling debris, a private residential building caught fire,” he said, adding later that the falling debris had completely destroyed one residential building, and partially damaged two others.
“Unfortunately, there are dead. The bodies of two people a man and a woman were recovered from the rubble by emergency services,” he wrote.
Another two people, also a man and a woman, were injured in the incident, and had been brought to hospital.
He added that the woman’s condition had been rated as “serious” by medical professionals, adding that the guy was in a coma and had significant burns, while the woman had a concussion and a shattered leg.
He stated that “the rescue operation continues” and cautioned that it was thought that a youngster was trapped underneath the wreckage.
An attempted Ukrainian drone strike in the Belgorod region had been “thwarted” at around 11:30 p.m. (2030 GMT) on Wednesday, the Russian defense ministry announced on Telegram early on Thursday.
No mention of casualties was mentioned.
Russia has survived rounds of drone assaults since Ukraine began its counteroffensive in June, particularly in border regions.
According to Gladkov, two civilians were killed by Ukrainian shelling on Tuesday in the Belgorod region.
