According to authorities, one of the largest single drug seizures in the history of the country saw over $8 million worth of drugs recovered by Thai anti-narcotics officials.
Despite numerous crackdowns, the so-called “Golden Triangle”—the region where Thailand, Myanmar, and Laos meet—has long been a hub for drug smuggling, particularly of methamphetamine.
Late on Wednesday night, police conducted a search on a building in the center of Nakhon Pathom city, capturing four guys there while also discovering a sizable stash.
“This is one of the largest amounts of drugs ever confiscated,” said newly appointed National Police Chief Torsak Sukwimol, adding the haul was worth roughly 300 million baht ($8 million).
According to him, authorities in the area create and utilize about 15 million “yaba” pills, or methamphetamine tablets.
According to figures from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, the police recovered more than twice as much of these pills last year, or about 540 million in total.
According to the newly appointed deputy police chief, the collection also contained approximately 450 bars of heroin and 400 kg of crystal meth.
Officers claimed that the group was temporarily storing the enormous hoard before passing it on to lesser traffickers. The stash had been transported via Thailand’s permeable northern borders.
“We’ve been keeping an eye on them for two years, and we had been trying to find this safe house,” said Torsak.
“They switched their safe house to here and we’d been looking for this place for a long time.”
