Iran puts Mahsa Amini’s lawyer on trial

According to a Wednesday media source, the trial for Mahsa Amini’s attorney has started in Iran. Mahsa Amini was a young Iranian Kurd whose death last September sparked a significant protest movement.

According to the daily Etemad, Saleh Nikbakht is accused of spreading “propaganda against the system”.

According to the statement, the first hearing “was on Tuesday and he was informed of the allegation of propaganda activities against the regime for having spoken to foreign and local media, regarding the Mahsa Amini incident in particular.

The trial for Nikbakht began close to a year after 22-year-old Amini passed away while in detention on September 16 of last year. She had been detained after being accused of disobeying the Islamic republic’s stringent clothing codes for women.

He faces a prison sentence of one to three years if found guilty.

According to Etemad, Nikbakht’s attorney argued for his release, claiming that in interviews, the defendant “only criticized the way the government was running the country.”

Nikbakht stated at the end of September 2022 that the Amini family had complained about the police officers who had detained her.

The hundreds of people slain during the Amini rallies, which Tehran referred to as “riots” instigated by foreign powers, included dozens of police officers.

Thousands of demonstrators and their sympathizers were detained by the authorities.

Nikbakht, who is from the western Kurdistan area, has long been a representative of prominent Iranian figures, including renowned director Jafar Panahi.
