The president of the Mymensingh District Awami League and a former technocrat minister of religious matters, Motiur Rahman, has away at the age of 81.
Around 10:45 p.m. on Sunday, Motiur, who had long served as the Alamgir Mansur Memorial College’s principal, passed away in a Mymensingh hospital.
The death of Principal Motiur Rahman, a brave liberation fighter who served as a former minister of religious affairs, member of the Awami League Central Working Committee, and president of the district Awami League in Mymensingh, shocked and saddened Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Monday.
The Bangladesh Awami League was led by the devoted Motiur Rahman, according to the Prime Minister’s condolence letter.
“Motiur Rahman performed his organisational duties, remaining steadfast to the ideals of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and the politics of the Awami League — defying uncountable inducement and repeated imprisonment,” she said.
Sheikh Hasina said that Motiur Rahman, who led the Mymensingh district Awami League for more than three decades, served as a trainer and successful organiser of freedom fighters during the Liberation War.
Motiur Rahman was awarded Ekushey Padak in 2022 for his outstanding contribution in the Liberation War.
