The Bundesliga team said on Tuesday that Robin Gosens, a representative of Germany, has signed a contract with Union Berlin till 2028 from Inter Milan.
The defender joined for a rumored 15 million euro ($16.5 million) transfer record-breaking fee.
Union, who got promoted to the top level for the first time in 2019 and qualified for the Champions League this season after finishing fourth last year, scored with the signing of Gosens.
“The last few years at Union have been impressive and people abroad have noticed that,” Gosens said in a statement released by the club.
Gosens said he felt “appreciation and trust” when talking to club officials and explained “the decision wasn’t hard for me to make.”
Union sporting director Oliver Ruhnert said Gosens stood for “commitment, mentality and team spirit.”
“On and off the pitch, he will now play a leading role for us.”
In order to get more playing time before Euro 2024, Gosens reportedly transferred to Union, according to German media on Tuesday.
Gosens moved from Atalanta to Inter in January 2022 and stayed there for 18 months. For Inter, the left-back played 39 Serie A games, usually as a substitute.
In Inter’s 1-0 Champions League final defeat to Manchester City, Gosens, who has played 16 times for Germany and scored twice, was a substitute.
Union will play Mainz at home to open their Bundesliga season on Sunday.
