India PM Modi’s government defeats no-confidence motion: speaker

The administration of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi survived a no-confidence motion in parliament on Thursday, following the premier’s heated speech at the culmination of a three-day debate.

According to television footage, the motion was lost in a voice vote conducted by the speaker of the lower house, shortly after opposition MPs, including Congress party leader Rahul Gandhi, stormed out of the room.

On Thursday, Indian opposition MPs walked out of the Lok Sabha as Prime Minister Narendra Modi was responding to a debate on the no-confidence vote, claiming that there was no mention of Manipur in the first 90 minutes of his speech.

During the prime minister’s response, opposition MPs were heard screaming ‘Manipur, Manipur’ as they pushed him to address the ethnic violence in the northeastern state.

While the prime minister was speaking, legislators from the opposition bloc INDIA staged a walkout.
