Developing countries can follow Bangladesh’s development model: WB

As he made a courtesy call on Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at her official Ganabhaban residence here today, World Bank Executive Director Parameswaran Iyer said developing nations should learn from Bangladesh’s development model.

“Bangladesh made phenomenal transformation in development with specific plans under Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s prudent leadership. Other developing countries can follow Bangladesh development model,” PM’s Press Secretary Ihsanul Karim quoted Iyer as saying in a media briefing after the meeting.

According to Karim, the prime minister informed the World Bank representative of her government’s development programs to assure Bangladesh’s overall development.

Bangladesh has seen tremendous development as her administration and party (Awami League) implement particular goals, according to Sheikh Hasina.

“Our main target is to alleviate poverty as we want to ensure better life to every person,” she said.

The World Bank executive director told Bangladesh that collaboration in infrastructure development would be extended in the next phase of development.

He stated that his organization has already contributed USD 700 million towards Rohingya resettlement.

The prime minister stated that the Rohingyas must return to Myanmar.

Concerning climate change, she stated that despite the fact that “we are not carbon emitters,” Bangladesh will suffer greatly from the negative effects of climate change.

Iyer, on the other hand, told the prime minister that the World Bank will help Bangladesh implement its Delta Plan-2100.

Sheikh Hasina stated that the World Bank is providing technical help for ecological restoration and maintaining the navigability of rivers surrounding Dhaka as part of an overall investment package aimed at making the city more habitable.

The World Bank representative also praised Bangladesh’s sanitation infrastructure, adding, “Bangladesh’s sanitation system is remarkable.”

He also commended the private sector’s role in development, calling it “thriving.”

The prime minister stated that her government has provided all necessary support for the private sector to thrive.

“We have opened everything to private sector,” she said.

Alternative Executive Director of the WB Dr Ahmad Kaikaus, Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) Secretary Mohammad Salahuddin and Economic Relations Division Secretary Sharifa Khan, were present, among others, at the meeting.
