Former lawmaker Prof Panna Kaiser passes away

Professor Panna Kaiser, a former politician, distinguished writer, researcher, and thinker, died this morning in a city hospital. She was 73 years old.

“Professor Panna Kaiser breathed her last at about 10am while undergoing treatment at the United Hospital in the city”, confirmed by her family sources here today.

She was survived by a daughter, a son, and a slew of relatives and fans.

Panna Kaiser was the mother of acclaimed actress Shomi Kaiser and the wife of slain philosopher, writer, and politician Shahidullah Kaiser.

Professor Panna was born on May 25, 1950, in Payalgacha, upazila of Barura in Cumilla district.

She began teaching at Badrunnesa Women College after receiving a post-graduate degree in Bengali Literature at the University of Dhaka.

She has served on the presidium of the children’s group ‘Khelaghar’ since 1973. She took over as president of this organization in 1990.

Shahidullah Kaiser was abducted from his home by al-Badr forces just two days before our victory day and never returned. Panna took care of the family and children in her husband’s absence and did not stop there.

Panna Kaiser sat in the ruling Awami League’s women’s reserved seat in parliament from 1996 until 2000.

She was awarded the Bangla Academy Literary Award 2021 for her important contribution to Liberation War study.
