Spanish court opens new tax probe into singer Shakira

Shakira, a Colombian music icon, is the subject of a fresh investigation into possible income tax evasion, a Spanish court announced on Thursday.

The “Hips Don’t Lie” singer, 46, is already scheduled to go on trial in Spain at the end of the year for allegedly failing to pay $16.3 million in taxes on revenue received between 2012 and 2014.

Now, a court in the municipality of Esplugues de Llobregat, in northeastern Spain, close to Barcelona, said that it has agreed with the prosecution to look into two potential tax fraud cases involving Shakira from 2018.

In its statement, the court didn’t offer any other information. The singer, who now calls Miami home, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and maintains that she has no outstanding debts to the Spanish tax authority.

She has not yet been informed about the latest probe, according to her representatives, who claim she was made aware of it by the media.

“As she has already said on numerous occasions, Shakira maintains she has always acted in accordance with the law and under the advice of the best tax experts,” they said in a statement.

“She is now focused on her artistic life in Miami and is calm and confident that her tax matters will be resolved favourably.”
