Iraq expels Swedish ambassador over planned Quran burning

On Thursday, Iraq issued an order to have the Swedish ambassador removed from its territory because of an upcoming Quran burning in Stockholm.

Iraq voiced its shock at the proposed desecration of the Quran in Stockholm. Iraqis earlier assaulted the Swedish embassy in Baghdad.

Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani “directed the Foreign Ministry to request the Swedish ambassador to Baghdad to leave the Iraqi territory in response to the Swedish government’s repeated permission of burning the Holy Quran,” according to a tweet from his media office.

According to INA, the national news agency of Iraq, the country has revoked Ericsson’s operating license.

Swedish news outlet TT reported on Wednesday that authorities had approved a request for a public gathering to take place Thursday outside the Iraqi embassy in the country’s capital, Stockholm.

According to the application, someone wants to burn the Quran and the Iraqi flag, TT reported.

During a rally in Stockholm, an Iraqi refugee living in Sweden reportedly trampled the Quran rather than burning it. The Quran was reportedly damaged but did not catch fire, according to TT.
