Summer vacation did not get off to a good start for supermodel Gigi Hadid. Hadid and her friend Leah McCarthy were detained in the Cayman Islands after customs officers discovered marijuana in their possession, according to eonline.com. They were later freed.
Customs officers allegedly discovered “ganja and utensils used for the consumption of ganja” in Hadid and her friend’s luggage immediately after they arrived on a private plane, claims local publication Cayman Marl Road.
According to the outlet, Hadid and her friend were subsequently detained on “suspicion of Importation of Ganja and Importation of Utensils used for the consumption of Ganja,” after which they were transferred to the Prisoner Detention Center and freed on bail.
According to Cayman Marl Road, Hadid and her friend were officially prosecuted on July 12 during a court appearance. They pleaded guilty and were each fined $1,000. They are not being prosecuted.
“Gigi was travelling with marijuana purchased legally in NYC with a medical license,” her rep tells E! News. “It has also been legal for medical use in Grand Cayman since 2017. Her record remains clear and she enjoyed the rest of her time on the island.”
