With seven more deaths recorded in the past day alone, the total number of deaths from dengue virus this year has reached 100.
In a press statement, the directorate general of health services (DGHS) reported that a record-breaking 1,623 dengue patients — 1,168 in Dhaka and 455 in districts — were admitted to hospitals over the course of the previous 24 hours.
It said that the current month alone has seen up to 53 fatalities out of the overall number of fatalities.
19,454 persons have been admitted to hospitals as a result of contracting the virus spread by mosquitoes, according to the DGHS. Of them, 6,345 instances were reported outside the city while 13,109 cases were reported within Dhaka.
Infection and fatality rates from dengue broke prior records in the first half of the current year.
The situation deteriorated in the current month as 41 deaths were reported in the first 12 days, compared to only nine death instances in the same month last year.
281 dengue fatalities were reported in Bangladesh in the preceding year, which was the highest amount. Prior to this, the viral fever took the lives of 179 people in 2019, seven in 2020, and 105 in 2021.
