Director James Gunn said Tuesday that rising US sensation David Corenswet will be the latest actor to assume Superman’s renowned red cape.
The 29-year-old, best known as the star in the popular Netflix series “Hollywood,” will play the famous character in Warner Bros.’ “Superman: Legacy,” which will be released in 2025.
Various Hollywood trade journals originally reported the development, which also indicated that Rachel Brosnahan, star of the multiple Emmy-winning comedy “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” is poised to play Lois Lane.
“Accurate! (They are not only both incredible actors, but also wonderful people),” wrote Gunn, retweeting the Hollywood Reporter’s article.
Given Superman’s popularity, the part is regarded as one of the most high-profile and scrutinized in Hollywood.
Christopher Reeve, Brandon Routh, and, most recently, Henry Cavill have all played Superman on the big screen.
Cavill, who has played Superman in films like as 2013’s “Man of Steel,” briefly reprised the role in the post-credits scene in last year’s “Black Adam.”
However, after a merger with Discovery, Warner put “Guardians of the Galaxy” filmmaker James Gunn in control of all DC Comics superhero movies, alongside “Aquaman” producer Peter Safran.
The team was tasked with rejuvenating the DC films, which have trailed in the box office in compared to rival, record-breaking Marvel superhero pictures, and have weathered a string of recent flops, including “The Flash.”
They soon announced a new direction for the series and have been actively recasting Superman ever since.
Corenswet has also been in the Netflix series “The Politician,” the HBO drama “We Own This City,” and the horror film “Pearl.”
