Skin temperature measurement has been added to Samsung Electronics’ current calendar-based Cycle Tracking capability. Users of the Galaxy Watch5 and Galaxy Watch5 Pro can now obtain even more detailed information to help them manage their menstrual cycles and overall wellness. The new feature will be gradually rolled out through Samsung Health app updates in Korea, the United States, and 30 European markets.
“Samsung’s holistic view of wellness has been further advanced by our sensor innovations, delivering in-depth health insights that empower users,” said Hon Pak, Vice President and Head of Digital Health Team, MX Business at Samsung Electronics. “The new infrared temperature sensor on Galaxy Watch5 broadens our whole health offerings, providing more convenient ways to track and understand personal health.”
People are turning to temperature readings to help them predict their next period because basal body temperature (BBT) varies by menstrual phase. BBT should be tested immediately after waking up and prior to any physical activity or environmental effect. Accurate BBT readings necessitate measurement first thing in the morning, which can be inconvenient and sometimes even forgotten. This process is now easier and more convenient thanks to Samsung’s new feature.
Natural Cycles powers the Cycle Tracking feature. It is integrated with Samsung’s sensor technology and allows users to watch skin temperature fluctuations, which is a decent indicator of basal body temperature, while sleeping right from their wrist. The Galaxy Watch5 series employs infrared technology to provide more accurate readings even when environmental circumstances vary. The sophisticated Cycle Tracking feature allows users to track ovulation and better forecast the start of their next cycle.
To activate, users must first pick Cycle Tracking in the Samsung Health app, enter their most recent cycle data into the calendar, and then enable “Predict period with skin temp” in the settings. Cycle Tracking displays readings collected throughout the previous month as a graph, giving users their cycle as well as their expected ovulation and fertile window. All data collected is encrypted and securely stored on the user’s own device, giving them greater control over their data.
Cycle Tracking also assesses symptoms recorded in the daily diary and provides relevant information and advice depending on them, such as scheduling a day to relax to alleviate weariness or gently exercising to relieve premenstrual pelvic pain. Furthermore, the Samsung Health app4 suggests useful content to help better manage holistic health during cycles, such as guided stretching or meditation classes to reduce stress and achieve a better night’s sleep — both of which are essential for a healthier self.
