Indian cricketer Virat Kohli was fined on Tuesday for violating the Indian Premier League (IPL) code of conduct after his team, Royal Challengers Bangalore, lost a nail-biting match to Chennai Super Kings.
According to media sources, Kohli’s exuberant celebration of Chennai batsman Shivam Dube’s wicket at a critical point in the high-scoring game on Monday resulted in the suspension.
The feisty 34-year-old was penalized 10% of his match fee after admitting to the offense, according to organizers, who did not specify which regulation the batter violated.
The suspenseful encounter, played in front of a rowdy Bengaluru crowd, featured a record-equaling 33 sixes before being won by Chennai Super Kings, headed by MS Dhoni, by eight runs.
“King Kohli,” one of the best batsman in modern cricket, has frequently gotten himself into problems on the cricket field with his aggressive style and no-holds-barred emotions.
He has had numerous run-ins with rival players and was once chastised for striking a plastic chair with a bat after being dismissed during an IPL match. He avoided a fine.
According to media reports this week, Kohli and India’s former cricket chief Sourav Ganguly have had a falling out, with the two men purportedly “unfollowing” each other on Instagram.
After a reported fall-out with Ganguly, Kohli resigned as Indian T20 captain in late 2021, and was sacked as One-Day International captain and quit as Test captain in January 2022.
