Pahela Baishakh, the first day of the Bengali New Year-1430, was celebrated with revelry across the country today, honoring the Bangalees’ rich traditional traditions and practices.
This year’s celebration of the first day of the Bangla calendar began at the capital’s customary location Ramna Botmool, with the Fine Arts Faculty of Dhaka University bringing out the traditional ‘Mangal Shovajatra’ (procession).
The Mangal Shovajatra was inaugurated by DU vice-chancellor Md Akhtaruzzaman in the presence of state minister for cultural affairs K M Khalid, DU pro-vice chancellor (administration) Muhammad Samad, and ASM Maksud Kamal, among others.
Pahela Baishakh is one of the most colorful celebrations in which Bangalees say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new.
People from all walks of life dress up in traditional Bengali attire on this event. Young ladies dress in white sarees with red borders and accessorize with bangles, flowers, and tips, while men dress in white pyjamas with a panjabi or kurta.
The government took an elaborate programme. The Mangal Shovajatra was brought out at divisional, district and upazila levels.
All secondary schools and colleges of the country celebrated Pahela Baishakh.
