Landslide in east DR Congo kills 19

Residents and regional authorities reported that a landslide killed at least 19 persons on Sunday in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo.

According to Chadrack Mbukanirwa Ndibanja, one of the village elders, the catastrophe took place in the late morning in the hamlet of Bulwa in the Masisi region of North Kivu.

According to him, the landslide claimed the lives of at least 19 individuals, and on Monday more bodies are expected to be found.

Local administrator Alphonse Mushesha Mihingano verified that 19 bodies had been found, but he emphasized that the death toll was provisional.

He claimed that about 25 mothers and their kids had been washing clothes in a stream at the base of a mountain when the earth collapsed, burying some of them.

Musafiri Balume, a resident of Bulwa, provided a similar account and claimed to have lost a sibling in the landslide that happened during the torrential downpour.
