In response to criticism of the club’s inner workings, Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp said the Reds will spend during the transfer window to build on a disappointing season.
Last season, Klopp’s team nearly won an unprecedented treble when they won the FA Cup and League Cup before narrowly losing to Manchester City in the Premier League and falling to Real Madrid in the Champions League final.
However, Liverpool’s chances of taking home a trophy this year are already over.
They are traveling to Manchester City on Saturday 27 points behind the leaders Arsenal in sixth place after being eliminated early from the local cups and at the round of 16 in the Champions League.
Although injuries to key players have played a significant part in a challenging season, Klopp said criticism of the club’s medical and physical preparation was unwarranted. Klopp’s team can now only hope to finish in the top four.
“(This season is) an anomaly but I would prefer we were still in the Champions League spot,” said Klopp on Friday.
“It doesn’t change overnight, you don’t lose all our brains and fitness and medical (department).
“Things happen and then you have to react, but when you are a little bit unlucky in this direction then it’s really difficult and the league is running away at that moment.
“That is where we were. The football part, we didn’t deal well enough with setbacks through the season.”
The focus has already shifted to Liverpool’s plans for summer bolstering, with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham being said to be their main target.
While the international break saw positive conversations with players, Klopp declined to provide an estimate of how much he will need to invest to get back in the race for trophies.
“We will spend in the summer, that’s what I can say definitely,” he added.
“For who and how many and stuff like this, there is nothing to say about, really.”
