Today, the nation commemorated the 103rd birth anniversary of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the revered father of the nation, and also celebrated National Children’s Day with great enthusiasm.
Bangabandhu, a charismatic leader and the visionary architect of independent Bangladesh, was born on this day in 1920 to a respected Muslim family in Tungipara village, Gopalganj sub-division (now district). He was the third child of Sheikh Lutfur Rahman and Saira Khatun, and grew up to become one of the greatest Bangalees of all time.
Different political, social, and cultural organizations as well as governmental organizations organized various programs to commemorate the occasion of the birth and National Children’s Day.
The program included doa and milad mahfil, munajat, prayers, discussions, processions, cultural events, voluntary blood donations, exhibitions of documentaries, drawing competitions, and distribution of food to the hungry, among other things. Bangabandhu’s portrait at Dhanmondi-32 in Dhaka and his mazar in Tungipara, Gopalganj, and Dhanmondi, were also decorated with wreaths.
The national and party flags were raised this morning on top of all party buildings, including the central office at Bangabandhu Avenue, as part of the agenda of the ruling Awami League.
On the occasion of his birth and National Children’s Day, President M. Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina lavishly honored Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
At around 10.30 am, the president and the prime minister showed respect by laying wreaths at Bangabandhu’s mazar (mausoleum) in Tungipara, Gopalganj.
The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed a wreath at Bangabandhu’s mazar after the President Hamid.
They stood in solemn silence for a while after laying the wreaths as a sign of their deep reverence for the nation’s founding father.
An honor escort was provided for the event by a well-groomed contingent made up of members of the Bangladesh Army, Navy, and Air Forces.
Abdul Hamid and Sheikh Hasina offered Fateha and joined a munajat seeking eternal peace of the departed souls of Bangabandhu as well as other martyrs of the August 15 carnage.
Cabinet members, PM’s advisers, parliament members and senior AL leaders were present.
