UN chief en route to Kyiv, will meet Zelensky

In his third journey since Russia’s all-out invasion, UN chief Antonio Guterres was scheduled to visit Ukraine on Tuesday to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv, according to his spokesman.

“The Secretary-General has just arrived in Poland on his way to Ukraine,” Stephane Dujarric said in a statement.

The meeting would be to “discuss the continuation of the Black Sea Grain Initiative (grain export plan) in all its aspects, as well as other relevant issues,” according to the spokesman for Guterres, who was scheduled to arrive in Kyiv later on Tuesday.

On Wednesday, Guterres is scheduled to leave Ukraine and return the following day to the UN’s New York offices.

There were no additional details provided about the visit, which was the third for the UN head following visits to Ukraine in April and August of last year following Russia’s invasion on February 24, 2022.

Guterres criticized the invasion as a “blatant violation” of the UN Charter and international law at a UN Security Council meeting conducted on the anniversary of the start of the conflict.
