On Monday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky issued a warning that the situation in and around the flashpoint of Bakhmut was becoming more complicated.
“The situation is getting more and more complicated,” Zelensky said in his evening address.
“The enemy is constantly destroying everything that can be used to protect our positions,” he said, calling Ukrainian soldiers fighting for Bakhmut “real heroes.”
The protracted battle of Russia’s year-long invasion has been for the industrial city of Bakhmut in the eastern province of Donetsk.
According to Zelensky, Ukrainians will continue to struggle for Bakhmut as long as they can.
Although seizing Bakhmut would be a significant victory for Moscow, some claim that the town’s conquest would be largely symbolic as it has little strategic significance.
Denis Pushilin, the head of the self-declared Donetsk People’s Republic, stated that all of the routes leading into Bakhmut were “under fire control” by the pro-Moscow forces in remarks that were aired on Russian television on Monday.
