According to the European Union Office for Asylum, 34,000 Bangladeshis applied for international protection in the EU in 2022. (EUAA).
According to data from the European agency released on Wednesday, nearly 20,000 Bangladeshis applied for asylum in the EU+ nations (the EU, Norway, and Switzerland) in 2021, and 33,729 irregular migrants from Bangladesh requested international protection in 2022, placing Bangladesh at the seventh place after Pakistan.
According to a press statement from the EUAA, about 966000 applications for international protection were submitted to EU+ countries in 2022, an increase of more than 50% from 2021.
Syrians, Afghans, and Turks made up the main applicant groupings, but many other nationalities also submitted substantial numbers of applications, which brought the caseload of applications awaiting determination to its highest level since 2017.
According to the EUAA, this indicates a large increase in 2021, up by around 50%, and is partly because to the elimination of Covid-19-related restrictions and longer-term underlying patterns such as conflicts and food instability in many origin regions, which operate as powerful push factors.
However, secondary migrations inside the EU and a sizeable number of legitimately admitted citizens of countries with visa-free travel also played a role.
It comes on top of the roughly 4 million individuals receiving temporary protection as they flee Ukraine. The Temporary Protection Directive was implemented in order to prevent the collapse of Europe’s asylum services by providing a dedicated channel without requiring an individual review of protection needs.
Nonetheless, the combined five million people seeking protection in Europe have put significant strain on its national receiving systems.
