According to local media on Wednesday, Lionel Messi will stay at Paris Saint-Germain to celebrate his World Cup victory and help the French team win the Champions League.
The 35-year-old will sign a one-season extension to his existing term in the French capital, which expires in the summer. He captained Argentina to victory against France in the World Cup final last weekend in Qatar.
Messi will meet with PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and other key club officials when he returns from the World Cup, according to Le Parisian and RMC Sport.
Messi completed his whole professional career with Barcelona before joining PSG in 2021 on a two-season contract with an additional year option.
In addition to 10 La Liga championships, the seven-time winner of the Ballon d’Or also won four Champions League titles in Spain in 2006, 2009, 2011, and 2015.
He helped Argentina defeat France on Sunday in the World Cup final following a thrilling game that ended 3-3 after extra time.
Messi, who was awarded player of the competition, scored twice in the match, and Kylian Mbappe, a PSG colleague, scored a hat trick for France.
